How Do You Retrieve File from a Hard Drive

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

If you need to retrieve an deleted file from the hard drive or a flash memory card, what should you do? It is better to write the retrieved file to another disk. You can use a floppy disk if the file size is small. Alternatively, the retrieved file can be written to a different drive letter on the same hard drive. You can perform this task using Norton Disk Editor. Norton Disk Editor is part of the Norton Utilities and Norton SystemWorks that is often used to retrieve lost data.

Disk Editor is created primarily to access FAT-based systems such as FAT12, FAT 16, and FAT 32. It is a command prompt program. If the Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP is installed on a FAT32 partition or hard drive, you can use Disk Editor to perform data recovery task. Disk Editor can function on NTFS volumes provided it is running in physical sector mode. To avoid making any accidental alterations to the hard disk when you are performing data recovery tasks you have to set Disk Editor to default Read-only mode.

The location of the file is determined using following process:

  1. Find out the cluster (allocation unit) size of the drive where the file is located.
  2. Run the Disk Editor to check out the name of the erased file and identify which clusters have the file data.

It is not necessary to restore the filename because it will be restored to another drive. Because the cluster will be copied to another file, it could be a great idea to look at the cluster and ensure that they contain the needed data. You must use the Norton Disk Editor to look at the starting and ending clusters of the file before you try to recover it. If you are retrieving file from a formatted drive, this is an important step that you have to do.

To copy the contents of clusters to a file safely, it is best to specify the sectors that have the file. You can use Disk Editor to figure out the sector number as well as the cluster number.

Other recovery software REMO Recover provide user-friendly and slick interface. Remo recover is a strong recovery software that uses effective scanning algorithms for data recovery. You can recover files from formatted drive by using this software. You can also use it to recover files from SD card as well as to recover files from USB drive.

Undeleting Files in NTFS File System

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

As compared to FAT file system of a PC running on Windows os, the structure of NTFS is far more complex. NTFS’s built-in compression may be used to compress files in the NTFS system. To recover deleted files from an NTFS drive, an NTFS specific file undeletion program is required. For example, a version of Norton utilities or Norton SystemWorks suitable for NTFS could be used. The Norton Protection feature can be beneficial because it offers certain level of data protection. You may use this feature to keep deleted files for a certain period of time before purging them from the system.

If a pc has not been installed with an undeletion program such as Norton Utilities or Norton Unerase, should you need to recover deleted files, you could use a standalone file recovery software such as:

  • Active Undelete: Active Undelete is a robust data recovery software which enables you to retrieve deleted files and restore deleted partitions. It functions on Windows. This program also works with flash memory cards.
  • Restorer Ultimate: Restorer Ultimate is the newer version of data recovery software that replace the well-known, award-winning Restorer2000. The newer version is quicker and more stable. Moreover it has more features and improvements that make data recovery more easier for user.
  • Remo Recover: REMO Recover is a strong data recovery software that includes powerful and effective scanning algorithms for data recovery. You could recover recycle bin and recover files from formatted drive using the component of this software. You can test run Remo Recover software by trying to recover files deleted from recycle bin using the software downloaded from its website.
